Whether you’re someone who likes to squeeze in a 30 minute stroll on a weekday, or an all-day hike on the weekends, when you’re in the South Australian capital, you’re never far from a stunning national park or beach. Here’s all the best walking trails across Adelaide that you need to see to believe.

Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty Summit

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

This is Adelaide’s most iconic walking trail where you’ll undertake a challenging climb to the summit of Mount Lofty. Starting at Waterfall Gully, the 4 kilometre trail will see you steadily climb to the summit of Mount Lofty where you’ll be greeted by views of Adelaide’s skyline and the coastline. The trail typically takes 1.5-3 hours to complete in its entirety, however keen runners and hikers can finish it within an hour. After a gruelling incline to the top, make sure you rest and treat yourself to a much-needed coffee from the Mount Lofty summit café.

Hallett Cove Boardwalk

Difficulty: Moderate

If you’re after unmatched coastal views, then the Hallett Cove Boardwalk is hard to beat. A quick 30 minute drive from Adelaide’s CBD, the trail is a 5 kilometre boardwalk that follows the South Australian coastline giving you the perfect serene environment for a casual weekend stroll. If you’re looking for an extra challenge, the boardwalk’s stairs are a great way to round out your workout.

Linear Park Trail (River Torrens Walk)

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

The Linear Park Trail follows the River Torrens from the Adelaide Hills through the city to Henley Beach. Stretching 30 kilometres, this walk is both scenic and accessible consisting of a flat, concreted path for the entirety of the trail. You can choose to walk shorter sections between the CBD and the Adelaide Zoo, or, if you’re up for the challenge, you can walk the entire trail which goes all the way to the beach.

Morialta Falls Valley Walk

Difficulty: Easy

Looking for a quick walk that puts you right in the heart of Adelaide’s natural landscape? The Morialta Falls Valley Walk is a great way to get the blood pumping when you’re pressed for time. Taking 45 minutes to complete in its entirety, this trail is relatively flat and takes you through a gorge, past cliffs as you make your way to First Falls.

Anstey Hill Recreation Park – Wildflower Wander

Difficulty: Easy

The Wildflower Wander is another quick, easy walking trail just outside of Adelaide. Taking place in Anstey Hill Recreation Park, the Wildflower Wander is a 3 kilometre loop gentle walk that winds you through native bushland. This walk is particularly beautiful in spring when wildflowers are in bloom, hence the walk’s name. Because this walk is short and easy, it’s perfect for beginners, families or those who want an outdoor walk but don’t have a whole lot of time.

Belair National Park – Echo Tunnel Hike

Difficulty: Moderate

The Echo Tunnel Hike is the best and most challenging walking trails in Adelaide. Located in Belair National Park just 25 minutes from the city, this walking trail takes you through the park’s bushland and through Echo Tunnel – a short railway tunnel that adds an exciting element to your walk. The trail is considered moderately challenging and is a 6.5 kilometre circuit, making it the perfect weekend walk.
