“Greens powders are dietary supplements made from dried and powdered green vegetables, fruits and other plant-based ingredients,” explains Accredited Practising Dietitian Alice Bleathman. Their purpose? To provide a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients commonly found in leafy greens, and colourful fruits and vegetables.
Designed to be mixed into water, smoothies or juices, greens powders may help with everything from boosting immunity to reducing bloating and regulating hormones, depending on their ingredients. Many of them are formulated with probiotics, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals too.
While they do have some health benefits, the research is limited, and Alice says they’re no substitute for a well-balanced diet. Just as drinking one glass of water after a bottle of wine can’t prevent a headache, taking one serving of a powder can’t negate an entire day of eating unhealthy foods.
“As a supplement, its purpose is not to replace a healthy diet, but to supplement one. Green vegetables in their natural form contain many nutrients that can’t be replicated in a powdered form,” explains Alice.
One of the more obvious examples is fibre. Fresh, whole vegetables provide essential dietary fibre, which supports digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and promotes a feeling of fullness. Most greens powders are low in fibre, which is removed during processing.
“The other important thing to note here is that whole foods, such as green vegetables, take longer to eat and digest, helping control hunger and support a balanced appetite. Greens powders are quick and easy to consume but lack the same satiety benefits.”
