The latest products and gadgets always seem to promise reduced signs of ageing, smoother skin or intense hydration, but how do we know who to trust?

As it turns out, we’re trusting science more than ever. According to Mintel research, customers are working smarter, not harder, and are making informed choices about the products they are purchasing.

The rise in AI technology, paired with increased brand transparency means that consumers are leaning towards evidence-based beauty. Consumers are reaching for products that are backed by scientists, doctors and dermatologists, and deep-diving into the clinical studies and research behind a product.

What is evidence-based skincare?

Evidence-based skincare is “products that are formulated based on independent scientific studies that are peer-reviewed and published in major medical journals”, according to Evidence Skincare, which was founded by Dr Ginni Mansberg.

Most of us look to marketing claims or personal testimonies from those we trust to guide our skincare purchases. However, evidence-based skincare allows us to make informed decisions that are backed by science.

Annette Rubin, CEO of HydroPeptide says “Put simply, people want results. The skincare market is heavily saturated, and savvy consumers are ready to cut through the noise of trends and discover brands they can trust”.

Brands will have clinical and user trial results readily available online, so consumers are able to do their own research and find out how a product performs before taking the step to purchase.

Science-backed brands such as Augustinus Bader are a great example of evidence-based skincare. Professor Augustinus is a biomedical scientist and physician, with over 30 years of research and experience that goes into creating products.

Why are clinical trials important?

The research found in clinical trials can help shape the development of skincare products. The results can provide consumers with the assurance that the product they are purchasing actually does what it says it will.

Clinical studies can also help consumers distinguish between marketing claims and scientific proof. Testing laboratories company Intertek said that “product claims need to be supported by robust evidence as consumers become more demanding and advertising authorities become more vigilant”.

Transparency over clinical trial results provides essential proof of the efficacy and validity of a product. Dr Dennis Gross, lead by cancer researcher and dermatologist Dennis, says they’re constantly advancing their products based on clinical research.

“Transparency is crucial for building trust and loyalty,” Annette says. “We want our customers to trust us with their skin and to know that we hold ourselves and our products to the highest possible standards”.

What brands have scientifically proven products?

There are a number of evidence-based beauty brands across all your favourite retailers. If you are just dipping your toes into evidence-based beauty, Paula’s Choice is a great place to start.

Murad, Medik8 and Dr. Naomi also have effective products for all skin types and concerns. If you are prepared to invest and indulge in your skincare, try SkinCeuticals or Dr. Barbara Sturm.
