The Dancing with the Stars voting system explained

The judges aren’t the only ones who get a say…

If you’re a little confused by the recent Dancing with the Stars eliminations, you’re not alone.

Firstly, Hayden Quinn was eliminated in Episode 4 despite not being in the bottom three on the leaderboard.

And secondly, in Episode 5, Julie Goodwin was eliminated along with Nova Peris (who was on the bottom of the leaderboard), even though Julie had earned 27 points from the judges and Ben Cousins had only earned 21…

Well, there’s a simple explanation. The judges‘ scores are combined with the studio audience vote.

How does the Dancing with the Stars voting work?

During each episode, each member of the studio audience votes for one celebrity after all of the performances.

These votes are then tallied and added to the judges scores; it’s important to note that the studio audience votes makeup 50 percent of the total combined score.

This is how some celebs who have been at the bottom of the leaderboard have ended up staying in the competition.

  • Online Voting: Viewers could vote on the official Dancing with the Stars website.
  • SMS Text Voting: By texting the contestant’s specific code to a designated number, viewers could cast their votes via SMS.
  • Facebook Voting: Some seasons of Dancing with the Stars allowed voting through Facebook. By visiting the show’s official Facebook page, fans could use comments on posts to vote for their favourite contestants.

However, the 2024 season did not allow viewers to vote…

This year’s Dancing with the Stars only implemented studio audience voting.
