What is Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical about?
It’s a biographical musical that tells the story of John Farnham’s dramatic career comeback in the 1980s. From a struggling former pop star to the voice behind a record that became a national phenomenon.
The narrative focuses on the five years leading up to the release of Whispering Jack (1980–1986). The plot explores the personal and professional risks John and his team took to reinvent his sound and achieve success.
Key figures in his life, such as his wife Jill Farnham and long‑time manager Glenn Wheatley, are central characters in the story, highlighting the support and sacrifices behind the music.
What songs will be in the musical?
Just like ABBA’s Mamma Mia and Elvis’ All Shook Up, the musical will feature some of John Farnham’s greatest hits. There will be songs from the Whispering Jack album, of course, but also some hits from his back catalogue.

Who will portray John Farnham in the musical?
Australian singer Michael Paynter will portray John Farnham in the upcoming musical biopic. Fresh off the back of his award-winning role in Jesus Christ Superstar (a role which John also played).
“For me, John Farnham is the absolute zenith of male singers in all of history,” Miachel said in a statement. “The gold standard that I have spent my entire life being blessed and instructed by. After the whirlwind of the last year, being chosen to be a part of this musical, on the Sydney Theatre Company stage, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
