The Danish Royal family have taken to Instagram to announce the death of Queen Mary’s Father, Professor John Donaldson, aged 84. Passing away in Hobart, he had been in declining health for several years.
“My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are grey,” a statement from Queen Mary reads.
“My beloved father has passed away. But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day, and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”

A professor of Applied Mathematics, John Donaldson was born in Scotland on September 5, 1941. Queen Mary was last able to spend time with her beloved father towards the end of her and King Frederik X’s state visit in March.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date, concluded the official statement.
Messages of condolence can be sent via Kongehuset.dk.
