7 life lessons to live by after 40

AWW readers swear by these life rules…

Sure, age is just a number, but there’s doubting the wisdom that comes with having done a few laps around the sun. Add these seven life lessons from these  “Fab 40s” women to your arsenal to keep you going from strength to strength.

Tip 1: Ignore the naysayers

“Opinions are like noses, everyone has one! Don’t waste time stressing about what other people think of you. If you’re being true to yourself and living by your own set of high standards then try to cut out the white noise. As someone once said to me, ‘It’s none of my business what other people think of me’. That can be really freeing!” – Kelly, 46

Tip 2: Laughter is the best medicine

“Laughter lines are gorgeous – and so much better than having worry or frown wrinkles. Ageing is beautiful … and a privilege. It really is true, beauty manifests from the inside. Have a happy life, be kind to yourself, practise gratefulness, appreciate your family and friends, take joy in the small things and your beauty will naturally shine through. You’ll glow!” – Bonnie, 40

Tip 3: Quality over quantity skincare

“Don’t waste your money on each fad skincare product out there – invest in a few quality products, especially a good serum and night cream. You don’t have to break the bank to buy products with effective ingredients. Do some research online and pretty soon you’ll see which products are ‘cult’ products and worth the hype. Surprisingly, many of them are really affordable!” – Natalie, 43

Cult skincare brand No7 has just launched its ground-breaking Future Renew range in Australia. The innovative hero ingredient, Pepticology™ has been a sellout success in the UK, targeting the visible signs of ageing and helping to renew, refresh and revitalise skin.

Tip 4: Sweat it out

“Incorporate a sauna ritual into your life; they benefit your mind, body and beauty. Solo saunas can be meditative, connecting back to self and checking in with your life journey. Saunas with friends are socially therapeutic, boosting your social battery and revitalising your wellbeing. The beauty bonus of a sweat session is beyond the detox glow you get, it’s the perfect prep for your weekly self-care facial.” – Bonnie, 40

Tip 5: Have an A-team

“As you get older it’s not about the amount of friends you have, but the quality of those friendships. Develop a sisterhood with your chosen besties and create a ‘brains trust’. These will be the confidants who you bounce ideas off with, ask advice from or get recommendations from – everything from a good book or a fab face cream to a wonderful therapist. These peeps will be there for you when you need support and they’ll also be the first ones who’ll celebrate with you when something great happens in your life. And you’ll do the same for them. Treasure these sorts of friends!” – Natalie, 43

Tip 6: Always keep learning

“Learn from those around you. Observe people and take note of how they do things – the good and bad. And use it to inform your own actions, skills and the way you communicate with people. Having a few mentors in different areas of your life can be life changing.” – Kelly, 46

Tip 7: Spread the love!

“When you think nice things about people – say it out loud. We so often have beautiful and kind thoughts about people but we don’t always articulate it. Complimenting a stranger in her dress can be hard … but being complimented by a random woman as she walks past you in the shopping centre? Best feeling ever!” – Kelly, 46
