Bonnie Tyler, the powerhouse Welsh singer known for major hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, It’s a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero, has died on 8 July 2026 aged 75.
She had recently been placed in an induced coma after suffering a perforated intestine, which caused a serious infection needing emergency surgery.
Bonnie was born Gaynor Hopkins in June 1951 in Wales and started her music career in a local talent competition. Although she came second, the experience gave her the confidence to start taking music seriously. “The excitement made me want to do it again. I really loved singing,” she later said.
She first shot to prominence in 1976 with the song Lost in France, which made the Top 10 in the UK. A year later, she famously underwent surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords, which gave a distinct raspy quality to her voice. This, coupled with her unmistakable voluminous blonde hair, gave her a classic 1980s glam-rock image.
While her first album, 1977’s The World Starts Tonight, was a commercial failure, she didn’t have to wait long for mega success. By the end of the year, she released It’s a Heartache, which topped the charts around the world. Just five years later, the release of the power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983 cemented her place as an international superstar and earned Bonnie a Grammy nomination.
The accompanying album, Faster than the Speed of Night, also entered the UK charts at number one, making Bonnie the first British female artist in history to claim the accolade. She remains the only female Welsh artist to score a number one record on the UK singles chart.
“The first time I heard [Total Eclipse] was when [composer] Jim Steinman just played it on the piano in New York,” she once said. “He sang the song all the way through, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this song is amazing. I can’t believe Jim is giving it to me’.”
Continuing to release albums and tour into the 21st century, Bonnie went on to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19 out of 26 acts. She was named in the Queen’s final Birthday Honours list in 2022 and was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2023.
Four decades after its release, Total Eclipse of the Heart surpassed a billion streams on Spotify in January 2026, after a new generation of fans discovered the song through a TikTok challenge.
“I have never gone out of fashion,” Bonnie once remarked of her enduring popularity. “And do you know why? Because I never sought it. When you don’t seek it, it’s always with you.”
