The 74-year-old underwent emergency intestinal surgery near her home in Faro, Portugal on Wednesday. Shortly after this, a spokesperson for the singer confirmed she was recouperating.

However, hours after this, the spokesperson revealed a change in her recovery.

“Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery,” he said. “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

The original announcement was shared on Instagram, which read: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” the statement read.

“We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

It was just in March 2026 that Bonnie was glowing with health, telling Hello! her only complaint was knee pain.

“I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” she said, as per GBNews. “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything.”

Bonnie did release two singles earlier this year, One Love and One World One Home. But she was best recognised for Total Eclipse of the Heart, written by Jim Steinman. The 1983 hit featured many films since, including Cate Blanchett’s 2001 movie Bandits

“[Jim] told me he had started writing the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu years before, but never finished it,” Bonnie told The Rolling Stone in 2023.
