Born Diane Hall on January 5, 1946, in Los Angeles, she studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York before making her Broadway debut in Hair in 1968. She adopted her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, as her stage name early in her career.

Her breakout film role came in 1972 when she was cast as Kay Adams opposite Al Pacino in The Godfather. Five years later, her performance as the quirky, endearing title character in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall won her the Academy Award for Best Actress and made her a household name.

Diane went on to enjoy one of the most enduring careers in Hollywood. She had acclaimed performances in Reds (1981), Marvin’s Room (1996), Father of the Bride (1991) alongside Martin Short and Steve Martin, The First Wives Club (1996), and Something’s Gotta Give (2003), which earned her another Oscar nomination.

A consummate performer who effortlessly bridged comedy and drama, Diane worked consistently across five decades, remaining a leading lady well into her seventies. Her later projects included Book Club (2018) and Summer Camp (2024).

Off-screen, Diane was recognised for her unique sense of style, which blended menswear tailoring with a timeless eccentricity. She was also an accomplished photographer, memoirist and producer, publishing several books that reflected her interests in art, architecture, and personal reflection. She also released a Christmas song ahead of the holidays in 2024.

After her mother’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in 1993, Diane was her carer until her mother’s death in 2008. She was also the primary caregiver of her brother, Randy, who died in 2021. Diane never married but adopted two children, Dexter and Duke, later in life.

She is survived by her two children and her golden retriever, Reggie, who was the subject of her last Instagram post for National Pet Day.
