Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloane on Grey’s Anatomy, first shared his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis with People on April 11, 2025. Ten months later, he died from complications related to ALS at age 53.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Eric said. However, he confirmed that he was not retiring.
He continued, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week,” he went on.
Eric stars as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, which went back into production for its long-awaited season three in 2025. Since then, Eric has prioritised his health and family.

The actor returned to the small screen with a guest-starring role as a firefighter with a neurodegenerative disease on NBC’s Brilliant Minds.
Reportedly, the actor received a 10-minute standing ovation” on set for his performance.
His endeavour to shed light on the disease does not stop at the screen. Maria Shriver’s The Open Field revealed the actor will author his own memoir titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments. It’s unclear whether this memoir will be completed now that he has passed away. The memoir was set to discuss his biggest moments. From his daughter’s birth, Grey’s Anatomy, getting sober, and the day doctors gave him his ALS diagnosis.
“I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge, and that’s exactly why I’m writing this book,” Eric said at the time of the book’s announcement, according to a statement from The Open Field.
“I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart.”

Does Eric Dane have ALS?
Sadly, Eric Dane had ALS and died from complications arising from the disease.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, specifically the motor neurons – the cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement.
In ALS, the motor neurons gradually degenerate and die. And as a result, the brain loses the ability to initiate and control muscle movements.

Over time, this leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually affects essential functions like speaking, eating, moving, and breathing.
There is currently no cure.
Eric Dane deteriorated quickly from ALS
On June 16, 2025, Eric sat down for an interview with Diane Sawyer and confirmed that his condition had progressed. He confirmed that he is losing function in both his arms and almost entirely in one arm.
“I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand, and I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I’d been texting too much and my hand was fatigued,” he told Diane in an interview for Good Morning America. “A few weeks later, I noticed it’d gotten a little worse. I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.’”
He then went on to explain further about his arm’s condition.
“I have one functioning arm. My left side is functioning,” he shared. “My right side has completely stopped working. [But my left arm] is going. I feel like maybe a couple, a few more months, and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”
Eric then went on to say that he is concerned about his legs.
When did Eric first start noticing symptoms?
In his interview in June 2025 for Good Morning America, Eric confirmed that he first started noticing his ALS symptoms while on a boating trip with his daughter, Georgia. Eric used to be a competitive swimmer, but while swimming on that trip, he found that he wasn’t able to. Georgia had to pull him from the water and effectively saved his life.
Eric Dane’s wife gives sobering update on his condition
In December 2025, Eric’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, spoke with The Cut about her husband’s condition and shared that he now required around-the-clock care. However, she and their daughters are spending as much time as possible with him.
“When we would have a meal with the kids, he’d say things like, ‘Something’s wrong with my hand,’” she said of Eric’s first symptoms. “He was struggling to use his chopsticks, dropping his food. That was when he started seeing doctors. He was initially diagnosed with a few other things, but he had this sinking feeling that it was something more serious.”

Why did Eric Dane miss the Emmys in 2025?
In May 2025, many speculated that Eric missed the Emmys due to his condition. However, in an interview with The Washington Post, he clarified that he was receiving treatment for a head injury.
“I was in the hospital during the Emmys, getting stitches put in my head. I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to,” Eric said in the interview. The Grey’s Anatomy cast was due to reunite that night. “It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues, I thought, would have been a special moment….I was a really upset about it, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”
Who is Eric Dane‘s wife?
As mentioned, Eric is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. However, the couple separated in 2017. They have not divorced one another, and they aren’t planning to.
“It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people. Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love,” Rebecca shared in an interview with The Cut.
“Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him. That I’m going to do my best to do right by him. And I know he would do the same for me. So whatever I can do or however I can show up to make this journey better for him or easier for him, I want to do that. And I want to model that for my girls: That’s what you do. That’s the right thing to do.”
The two tied the knot on October 29, 2004, and share two children: Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
