Nicole Kidman has revealed that her latest project, the Amazon Prime Video series Expats, all came about because of her sister Antonia.
At the Australian premiere of Expats, which The Weekly was lucky enough to attend, the Oscar-winning actress shared that Antonia read the best-selling novel The Expatriates – on which Expats is based – and was the one who suggested Nicole turn it into a film or series.
“My sister… She was reading it, she was in Singapore at the time, she was an expat. And she read the book and she goes, ‘I think this would be great for your company [Blossom Films].’”
“And I subsequently read it and we optioned it,” Nicole continued before joking:
“And she got a finders fee.”
The Expats premiere took place on December 20, 2023 at Palace Verona Cinema in Sydney and Nicole walked the red carpet with husband Keith Urban before introducing the screening – an incredible full circle moment for the actress.
Nicole officially opened the very same venue in 1996 for the premiere of her film To Die For, and Expats was the last event to ever be held at Palace Verona before it closes for good in January 2024.
“I was here for To Die For, we did the premiere here. And now we’re doing this here as the final premiere which is sort of sad but also what an extraordinary trajectory getting from there to now,” Nicole said.

What is Expats about?
Based on the 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, Expats follows three expatriates living in Hong Kong – Mercy, Hilary and Margaret.
Mercy is a recent Columbia graduate wanting to start her life over, Hilary is trying to fall pregnant in the hopes of saving her failing marriage and Margaret is a mother of three struggling with her maternal identity.
But when a tragic incident causes the three women’s lives to collide, there are irreversible consequences for them all…
