The award-winning television series Big Little Lies is getting a Season 3, as confirmed by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon!

And it looks like we all have Nicole’s daughter Sunday Rose to thank.

“My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, ‘Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,’” Nicole shared to Elle in March 2024.

The news of Big Little Lies getting a third season was first announced on November 17, 2023 during a Q&A at the CME Group Tour Championship.

Nicole initially revealed onstage that a few years ago she was planning to take a step back from acting. But the first season of Big Little Lies changed her mind.

“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire.

“And then this situation came along where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show and then all of you watched it and made it a massive success,” the Oscar-winner said before casually dropping the Season 3 bombshell.

“And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI [for your information]. Yeah.”

This was further confirmed at the 2024 Golden Globes when Reese Witherspoon told Variety, “We are working on it. Nic[ole Kidman] and I are working on it a lot,” and when Nicole told Variety a few weeks later that she and Reese are “texting every day” about the new season and are definitely “at work on it”.

“And there’s a timeline and we’re doing it,” she continued.

Season 1 of Big Little Lies was released in 2017 and was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty.

Originally, the show – which stars Nicole and Reese, as well as Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern – was supposed to be a miniseries, so Season 1 covers the entire plot of the book.

However, when the first season became a huge success and won multiple awards, a second season, based on a new novella by Liane, was developed and ultimately released in 2019.

And here we are five years later, ecstatic that a third season is on the way!

Warning! Spoilers for the book and first season of Big Little Lies lie ahead.

However, both the book and the show follow a group of women who are brought together when their respective children begin attending the same school: Madeline (played by Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (played by Nicole Kidman), Jane (played by Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (played by Zoë Kravitz), and Renata (played by Laura Dern).

Over the course of the book and first season, it’s revealed that each of these women have a not-so-perfect life. For instance, Celeste’s husband Perry is physically abusive, and single-mother Jane’s child was the result of a horrific sexual assault.

But as for the endings, they are slightly different.

In the book, Bonnie pushes Perry off a balcony to his death. Madeleine, Celeste and Jane, who witnessed her do it, agree to lie about what happened to protect her… But ultimately, Bonnie turns herself in. She is convicted of accidental manslaughter and sentenced to 200 hours of community service.

Whereas at the end of Season 1, Madeline, Celeste, Jane and Renata fight with Perry until Bonnie pushes him down a set of stairs to his death. They tell the police of the fight, but all insist Perry fell accidentally.
