It’s a most exciting time when reigning monarchs come together. Besides a coronation or royal wedding, a state visit is often one of the rare occasions we get to see the extravagant displays of the monarchy.
According to the official Danish royal website, a state visit is carried out by members of a royal family.
It aims to establish and strengthen the social and commercial relationships between the two countries.
While it may be business as usual for them, we can’t help but look on in awe at the elegance and poise the working royals show while performing their official duties.

The visit began with a ceremonial welcome at the Royal Palace in Brussels, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

In the evening, Their Majesties hosted a state banquet at the Castle of Laeken in honour of the President and First Lady. Queen Mathilde of Belgium donned a powder pink gown designed by Pierre Gauthier. She complemented her attire with the Brabant Tiara, commonly known as the Laurel Tiara. This gown was not new to the Queen; she had previously worn it during a gala dinner in November 2016 as part of a state visit to the Netherlands.
The Laurel Tiara is a classic piece crafted from platinum and set with brilliant-cut diamonds. Created in 1912 by Hennel & Sons, it features a laurel wreath design and is one of the prominent tiaras in the Belgian royal collection.

During the visit, President Tharman met with Belgian Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Bart De Wever, and Brussels’ Mayor Philippe Close. Discussions focused on strengthening collaborations in maritime, innovation, and sustainability. The President also visited Flanders and Wallonia, touring PSA Antwerp’s Europa terminal at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the Université Catholique De Louvain.

For the dinner gala, Queen Mary donned a glamorous floor-length black lace Jesper Høvring gown. She also chose two special jewellery pieces to complete her ensemble.
A post to the Danish Royal Family’s Instagram account explained that the Queen is wearing Queen Caroline Amalie’s golden diadem with antique jewels and Princess Vilhelmine Marie’s bracelet with Vesuvsten. The two pieces “have not been worn for over 140 years”, the post continued.
The palace further revealed that the jewels adorning the headpiece were collected by King Christian VIII in the 1800s while on a trip to Italy with his wife, Queen Caroline Amalie. They were collected from Rome and excavations at Pompeii. The tiara was then made around 1820 on their return to Denmark.
