What is Sam Wasson’s novel Fifth Avenue, 5A.M. about?

This 2011 book has been described as “the first ever complete account of the making of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” In 288 pages, the story details the pre-production, on-set drama and the conflicting feelings Audrey had.

Characters featured in the novel include Truman Capote, who desperately wanted Marilyn Monroe to portray Holly Golightly, and director Blake Edwards, who filmed multiple endings.

What is Breakfast at Tiffany’s about?

The romantic comedy is set in New York City in the 1940s. Breakfast at Tiffany’s opens with Holly Golightly, dressed up in her iconic black dress and pearls that many still replicate today. Chewing on a bagel while fixating on the expensive jewellry, the moment feels peaceful yet solemn.

“Well, when I get [the mean reds] the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there,” she said in the movie.

While it was an impressive first impression, the next time we meet Holly is starkly different. Audrey’s character is an eccentric socialite chasing wealth, and has a cat literally called ‘cat.’

We won’t spoil all the details! But the story truly begins when struggling writer Paul Varjak misplaces his keys to his new apartment and starts repeatedly calling the apartment of Holly.

But as the story progresses, this once seemingly naive young and carefree person is revealed to be a mysterious woman with a troubled past.
