What has happened to Ozzy Osbourne?
The news comes just under three weeks after the British front man, known by fans as The Prince of Darkness, made his onstage retirement. On July 5, he reunited with original Black Sabbath bandmates at Villa Park in Yorkshire. Back To The Beginning was their first time on stage together since 2025.

Hosted by Jason Mamoa, acts including Metallica to Alice in Chains paid tribute to the pioneering heavy metal band. Black Sabbath closed the show with Ozzy singing four songs whilst seated in a bat adorned throne.
“I’ve been laid up for six years, and you’ve got no idea how I feel,” Ozzy told the packed crowd., acknowledging the extensive health issues he had faced including a form of Parkinson’s and a slew of spinal surgeries. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Where was Ozzy Osbourne from?
Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, in Aston, Birmingham Ozzy was one of six children.
His childhood was “pandemonium” he would say in his autobiography I Am Ozzy in 2010.
The family had it tough financially. And at the age of 11 he was sexually abused by boys who were bullying him at school, revealing it “completely f’ed me up”.

Diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, Ozzy dropped out of school and started to dabble with petty crime. After a short stint in prison ahead of his 18th birthday for robbery, Ozzy’s world to music began when he joined forces with Geezer Butler – who would later be his Black Sabbath bassist – in 1967 for his first singing gig.

What was Ozzy Osbourne famous for?
Two years later, Black Sabbath was formed. Known for his unique voice and gleeful wild behaviour – including the infamous incident of biting a head of a live bat – Ozzy was credited with bringing heavy metal to the masses.
The band split up due to Ozzy’s battle with booze and drugs in 1979.
“I’ve always been self-medicating because I’ve never liked the way I felt,” he told Variety in 2021 of his ongoing battle with sobriety. “I’ve had great success in my life, but I’ve never felt great about myself. And so, from a very early age, I used to sniff fumes, all kinds of things, anything to get me out of my head.”

Despite this, a successful solo career followed from 1980. But it was his 2002 entry into reality TV with The Osbournes which took him, along with wife Sharon and children Jack and Kelly, to a new generation of fans.
Who are Ozzy Osbourne’s children?
While his continued battle with addiction was touched on, the series focused mainly on his endearing soft side and love for his family.
“All the stuff onstage, the craziness, it’s all just a role that I play, my work,” he told he The New York Time. “I am not the Antichrist. I am a family man.”
In addition to his three children with Sharon (Aimee chose not to be shown on The Osbournes), he had two older children, Jessica and Louis, from his first marriage to Thelma Riley. He was also step parent to her son from a previous relationship, Elliot, adotping him after their marriage.

Thelma and Ozzy were married in 1971 and divorced in 1982, ahead of his marriage to Sharon.
Sharon and Ozzy had met in 1970 when her father, Don Arden was managing Black Sabbath. She became his manager after he was fired from the band and encouraged him to get back on his feet.
And while their love was evident, it wasn’t without it’s dramas. In 1989 he woke up in jail after having attempted to strangle Sharon, after a bender. She forgave him and didn’t press charges. Ozzy was ordered by the court to spend six months in rehab as a result. And in May 2016, the pair briefly split after it was revealed Ozzy had been involved in a four-year-long affair.

What was Ozzy Osbourne diagnosed with?
Despite this, they would reunite. And Sharon was firmly by his side as his health seriously declined.
In 2019 he revealed he was had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This is a degenerative brain condition which causes a variety of symptoms including slowed movements, balance problems, tremors and problems with speech.
A traumatic quad-biking accident in 2003 saw him break his neck, collarbone and ribs. He was in a coma afterwards, and had several metal rods inserted as part of his recovery. A fall in 2019 would exacerbate his old injuries and in 2020 he returned for more spinal surgery.
In recent years he has spoken of his depression over the extensive treatments. Due to this, Sharon came up with the idea for the Back to the Beginning Concert, his final performance.
“If I can’t continue doing shows on a regular basis, I just want to be well enough to do one show where I can say, ‘Hi guys, thanks so much for my life,” he told Rolling Stone in 2023. That’s what I’m working towards, and if I drop down dead at the end of it, I’ll die a happy man.”
