Queen Mary has provided an update on Queen Margrethe after she was rushed to hospital last week.
Before a National Conference for Health Visitors in Copenhagen, Mary told reporters, “I had the opportunity to visit her a few times since she came home. She’s super cool and keeps her spirit high.”
An official spokesperson for Margrethe first confirmed the news of her hospitalisation to Ritzau (a Danish news publication) on September 20.
“Queen Margrethe was taken to Rigshospitalet [in Copenhagen] last night after falling at Fredensborg Palace,” the palace’s communications chief Lene Balleby said via a written statement.
“The Queen is doing well given the circumstances but is currently admitted for observation.”
The palace then released a statement later on September 20 that confirmed Queen Margrethe had been discharged from hospital but had suffered an injury to her neck vertebrae and a fracture to her left hand during the fall.
“Queen Margrethe is in good spirits and is doing well under the circumstances but will however be on sick leave for a longer period,” the statement read.
Furthermore, King Frederik told reporters that his mother “is in good hands” as he arrived at the Danish capital’s City Hall to attend celebrations marking the 100 anniversary of the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir.
“We take it day by day. The doctors are the ones who decide.”
This isn’t the first health issue Margrethe has had in recent years.
In 2023, she underwent a significant back surgery to address long-standing health issues.
Magrethe had been dealing with back problems for several years but early last year, these issues had progressively worsened, affecting her mobility and causing discomfort.
After careful consideration and consultations with her medical team, it was decided that surgery was the best option to improve her quality of life.
The surgery took place in February 2023 at Rigshospitalet, and the Royal House of Denmark announced that the procedure had been successful.
However, as a result of the surgery, Margrethe took significant time off from her royal duties to recover.
The then-Crown Prince Frederik temporarily took over her official responsibilities.
Margrethe then returned to her duties in July 2023 before abdicating in early January of this year.
Frederik and Mary were then crowned King and Queen of Denmark on January 14.
