Whispers of David Jones’ financial troubles stirs concerns for Australian shoppers

The department store opened in 1838.

David Jones has proudly served Australia for almost 190 years. Its doors first opened in 1838 by Welsh-born immigrant, Mr David Jones.

But since that very first store, settled on the corner of Sydney’s George Street, the department store has found itself in murky waters with financial troubles concerning the union representing 4644 of its 5652 employees.

Reports suggest the retailer could be put into administration if it cannot reach an agreement to close some of its 38 stores.

The 2025 financial report showed losses increased to more than $95 million and sales declined to $2 billion. In the same financial year, costs totaled $153 million with lease and rent costing $125 million.

David Jones’ key lender, Hilco Capital has allegedly funded $10 million to the department store ahead of the festive season, as per the ABC. However, Hilco refused to confirm the official amount.

“Hilco Capital has funded above the agreed facility to allow David Jones to increase stock holdings ahead of the busy Christmas trade and sales period,” a Hilco spokesperson said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. “Hilco remains supportive of the business, and any inference otherwise is false.”

David Jones is one of the many Australian clothing stores facing an uncertain future. Recently, Cue Clothing and its sister brand Veronika Maine collapsed, with both stores being listed for sale.

However, the development with David Jones marks a major shift in Australia’s fashion culture. For almost two decades, David Jones has been at the forefront of change: it was the first Australian retailer to deliver parcels by air, during World War II it delivered care packages and a copy of the David Jones’ News to the soldiers on the front line.

Many of us grew up waiting to see the themed Christmas display and the Spring Flower Show at the flagship store in Elizabeth Street.

That same store hosted a state dinner in 1954 at its Great Restaurant for Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

If there was an occasion, David Jones was there to celebrate. For its 120th birthday, it hosted a fortnight-long celebration including fashion parades, a petting zoo, pottery classes and the largest cheese wheel in Australia.

David Jones is yet to comment on the recent news, however, the company seems to be operating as usual.
