From turning up the volume on a conversation with friends to catching every word of your favourite TV show, many of us struggle to hear at times – whether we’d like to admit it or not.

If you have found yourself working harder to understand what’s happening around you, the answer could be in a device you already own: your headphones.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 have evolved beyond just wireless earbuds to listen to podcasts and music – they can now serve as hearing aids, making everyday conversations, phone calls, and social settings easier for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Although it’s still not often talked about openly, hearing loss is more common than you might think. According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 1.5 billion people around the world are living with a hearing impairment, with researchers finding links between untreated hearing loss and our overall wellbeing, in addition to increased risk of social isolation and dementia.

How do AirPods help with hearing loss?

Apple has introduced two main features: Conversation Boost and Personalised Amplification. Conversation Boost focuses on voices in noisy environments, making it easier to hear a friend across a busy café or a colleague in an open-plan office. Meanwhile, Personalised Amplification adjusts audio based on your specific hearing needs, enhancing clarity without distorting sound.

The update also includes a hearing test that can be done straight from your iPhone or iPhone, using the Health app. This allows you to assess your hearing at home and get a personalised sound assessment in five minutes, the results of which can then be shared with your GP.

Apple’s software works in real-time, customising the audio experience of your headphones based on the results of your hearing test. This means that if certain frequencies are harder for you to hear, your AirPods can boost those sounds while keeping everything else balanced.

Who can the AirPods’ hearing aid feature benefit?

Anyone who struggles to hear in loud environments, frequently asks people to repeat themselves, or finds phone calls difficult could find this helpful. While AirPods Pro aren’t intended to replace medically prescribed hearing aids (your first port of call should always be your GP or audiologist), they’re a good option for those with mild hearing loss who may not yet require a full hearing aid solution.

It’s also an alternative if you feel self-conscious about wearing traditional hearing aids. If you already own a pair, it’s a discreet way to improve your hearing without drawing attention to it.

It could also be a good option if you can’t afford hearing aids. At $399, they’re significantly cheaper than prescribed hearing aids. Although government subsidies are available to those who are eligible, many still find them financially out of reach.

Of course, AirPods won’t replace advanced hearing technology used by audiologists, but they’re a valuable tool for many of us who need a little extra help.

The feature is intended to amplify sound for individuals 18 years of age or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment. Always consult a healthcare professional before making any changes or updates to your health.
