When it comes to household cleaning, vacuuming is up there as one of the most frequent tasks. And while there is something satisfying about watching vacuum cleaners suck up dust, dirt and other debris, it becomes frustrating when they aren’t performing at their best.
So how long is a vacuum supposed to last? According to consumer advocacy group Choice, most vacuum cleaners in Australia should last between 5-8 years.
This can vary depending on factors including the type (Choice focused on stick or barrel/upright models), brand and price. How often you use it and do maintenance (like cleaning the filters) also have an impact.

How choose the best type of vacuum cleaner for your home: Expert insights
Australians have a huge range of choice when it comes to the type of vacuum cleaners on the market, so choosing the type (or types) you’re interested in can be a simple way of focusing your search for a new one. So, I spoke to Colin Jones, a category expert at Appliances Online, to get some insights on the main types of vacuum cleaners.
Stick vacuums are a more popular choice these days because they’re cordless, lightweight and often come with detachable, handheld vacuums. Colin says they’re “ideal for quick clean-ups and everyday messes”.
“They’re especially effective on hard floors and in small to medium-sized spaces,” he notes.
“However, they often have smaller dustbin capacity, limited battery life, and less suction power compared to upright or barrel vacuums and require more frequent emptying and charging.”
You can find good vacuum cleaners at low price points across the range, but more conventional barrel or canister vacuums with power cords had a reputation for being solid all-rounders. Colin describes them as the “tried-and-true model”, and most of us will be familiar with wheeling them around rooms.
“These vacuums offer good suction at a reasonable price point. They feature a separate canister and hose, and while some models require dust bags, others are bagless, saving you the hassle of searching for replacement bags when the model changes,” he says. But the weight and power cord length can be limiting, so it’s important to check these details when you’re shopping around.
“Robotic vacuum cleaners have gained popularity for their convenience and hands-free operation. These smart devices can clean while you’re away or asleep, making them perfect for busy households,” Colin says.
“They excel at maintaining hard floors and low-pile carpets, and many models can be controlled via smartphone apps, allowing for scheduling and remote operation. Their compact size allows them to clean under furniture easily.”
But, he notes, they do have limitations, such as hands-on set up to effectively map your home, as well as limited navigation or obstacle avoidance issues. Years ago, I remember a friend of mine had a robot vacuum years that was great – until it got stuck under the couch or in a tight corner.
“From the long-standing barrel vacuum cleaner, to the popular upright vacuum, the convenient cordless stick vacuum, and the high-tech robotic models, each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages to consider before making a purchase,” Colin says. But knowing about the different types means you can compare and choose a vacuum cleaner that has the key features and functionality that you want when cleaning your home.
Other types of vacuum cleaners
While cordless stick vacuums, robot vacuums and canister vacuum cleaners are the most common, there are a few other styles on the market, including backpack, barrel and upright vacuums.
“Upright vacuum cleaners were popular in the past when there were fewer vacuum types available,” Colin notes.
“They remain a good choice for cleaning large, open areas with minimal obstacles. Available in both bagged and bagless models, uprights offer good suction but can be heavy to lift and are generally less convenient for cleaning staircases or tight spaces.”
But unlike cordless stick vacuums, upright models are often corded. So it’s a good idea to consider cord length and where the power points are in your home for this type of vacuum.
Backpack and barrel vacuums are both often associated with more commercial use, but backpack models can be a good choice if you’d prefer not to lug the vacuum around with your arms.
Beyond that, there are specific models for wet-and-dry vacuuming, pet hair and dander cleaning and other specific cleaning needs. These can come in any shape or size, so you’ll often find canister, stick and robot vacuums with features suited to these needs.
