The first full moon of 2026 is here, and this year it’s extra special. It’s a new month in the lunar cycle, which means another full moon is on the way. In January, that full moon is known as the Wolf Full Moon.
A little eerie, a little poetic, and definitely brings to mind werewolves and supernatural tales… let’s get into it.
Why is the January Full Moon called the Wolf Moon?
Despite the name, the Wolf Moon has nothing to do with wolves appearing in the sky or people turning into wolves. There are lots of speculation on where the name originates.
Some say it’s from Native American people, which was then adopted by European settlers and colonists, and others say it has origins in Celtic and Old English traditions. Regardless, in the northern hemisphere, January is a harsh, cold month. Food was scarce, and wolves across the continent were heard howling outside villages and towns as packs hunted together.
As traditional moon names have their origins with the seasonal changes at the time, the sound of wolves howling became associated with this time of the year.
What does wolves mean in Celtic mythology?
Wolves rarely appear in Celtic mythology as central figures, but when they do, they carry powerful symbolic meanings. In Celtic mythology, wolves were regarded as symbols of guardianship, loyalty, intuition and protection. They were seen not just as wild animals, but as spiritual guides and companions associated with strength, instinct and survival — often appearing in mythic tales as helpers or guides through danger or the unknown.
In some myths, wolves were associated with shape-shifting. One of the oldest recorded werewolf tales in Ireland comes from Gerald of Wales’ 12th‑century work Topographia Hibernica. In it, a travelling priest is accosted by a talking wolf in a forest. The wolf explains that he and his wife are actually humans from Ossory (a historical kingdom in modern Kilkenny and Laois), cursed by Saint Natalis to take wolf form for seven years at a time. The wolf begs the priest to give last rites to his dying mate before returning them to human form.
What are other names for the full moon in January?
The Wolf Moon isn’t the only name given to January’s full moon. Different cultures and regions used names that reflected their environment and experience of the season, including:
- Cold Moon, Hard Moon, or Severe Moon: Referencing deep winter conditions
- Moon After Yule: In old European traditions, signals the post-holiday reset

When will the Wolf Full Moon happen in Australia?
According to Time and Date, the January Full Moon will reach its peak on 3 January around 9.02 pm AEST.
This full moon is also a supermoon, meaning it’s closer to Earth than usual, making it brighter and larger in the sky. It’s a perfect opportunity for moonlit walks, beach gazing, or even some dramatic photography with no telescope required.
Because it’s the first full moon of the year, it’s associated with fresh starts, reflection, and setting intentions. The Supermoon energy amplifies these themes, giving us a celestial nudge to start 2026 with focus and clarity.
Can a full moon affect you?
There’s a reason why the word “lunatic” has origins in the later word for the Moon, “Luna”. Opinions vary, but many people report feeling more emotionally alert, restless or reflective during a full moon. Some scientific studies suggest sleep may be slightly disrupted, even when people aren’t consciously aware of the moon.
Astrologically, the full moon represents a peak — a moment of culmination, clarity or release. The Wolf Moon, in particular, is often associated with self-honesty, resilience and taking stock at the start of the year.
