What’s the name of the full moon in March 2026?

As mentioned, full moons often have various names attached to them. This is because in ancient times, people marked various stages of the year by the moon. So, for instance, the February full moon is often called “The Snow Moon” because it often snows in February in the northern hemisphere (which is where the names often originate). Also, June’s Full Moon is called “The Strawberry Moon” because it’s when strawberries are in season and plentiful.

In the northern hemisphere, March is often the time when the ground thaws and life starts to return to nature. Earthworms reappear and crows caw, bringing the first signs of spring. Therefore, March’s Full Moon is traditionally called the Worm Moon or the Crow Moon. Some other names for the Moon in March are the Sap Moon (as sap begins to flow in trees as the weather warms) and the Lenten or Paschal Moon, as it often occurs during Lent in the Christian calendar.

The Full Moon in March is actually special in the Lunar Calendar, because traditionally, March was the first month of the year. It makes sense if you think about the seasons in the northern hemisphere. It’s still cold (and snowy) in January and March, so spring doesn’t often start until March, when we start to see life return.

That’s why September starts with “sept” (meaning seven), October starts with “oct” (meaning eight), November starts with “nov” (meaning nine), and December starts with “dec” (meaning ten).

When is the Worm Moon or Crow Moon visible in Australia in 2026?

The March full moon will reach its peak on 3 March at 10.37 pm AEST.

However, you should mark your calendars as there will be a Total Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse visible from 3-4 March as well. Meaning that the Moon will be obscured by the Earth’s shadow, which will cast a reddish hue on the Crow Moon.

Can a full moon really influence how you feel?

Research hasn’t found convincing proof that a full moon significantly changes human behaviour or mood. That said, some small studies indicate people might sleep a little less when the moon is bright, possibly because the extra light interferes with natural sleep rhythms.

Any impact appears to be minor and differs from person to person. While the moon clearly affects the Earth — driving ocean tides and influencing certain animal behaviours — its effect on humans, if present at all, is likely subtle and indirect, mainly linked to light exposure and sleep.

Still, the moon has carried symbolic and cultural weight for thousands of years. Even if the biological impact is limited, its emotional and psychological resonance can make it feel powerful.
