Happy New Year! After staying up to watch the fireworks and celebrate with friends and loved ones, come the morning you might realise that you are short on bread or milk, or (the horror) coffee. Australia’s major retailers have confirmed their New Year’s Day trading hours, but it varies across the country.
Good news, petrol stations are open as they are classed as exempt shopps/essential services. So, if you need a couple of essentials, you should be able to stock up at the servo.

What supermarkets are open on New Year’s Day?
Thankfully most supermarkets across the country will be open on New Year’s Day. However, there are some exceptions.
Woolworths’ stores will be open on New Year’s Day in New South Wales, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania, Queensland, and Westeran Australia (except Northam). However, there will be store closures in South Australia and Tasmania.

Coles is a similar story. There are only some closures and reduced hours in South Australia. Regional SA stores will open from 8am to 8pm, but suburban stores will be closed. Check out its website to be sure.
Aldi is again a similar situation. Its stores will be open across the country, except for Adelaide metropoliotan area. Its regional stores will stay open. Check the website if you’re unsure.
What pharmacies are open on New Year’s Day?
Illness and injury don’t wait for public holidays and some may be in search of electrolytes or pain killers after a late night of ceelebration.
Many Priceline Pharmacies will be closed on New Year’s Day, however, those that are open, will have reduced hours. Confirm your local store’s opening hours on its website.
Chemist Warehouse stores will be open across the country…except for South Australia where many will be closed. You can ensure if you’re local outlet is open on its website.

What bottle shops are open on New Year’s Day?
If you’d like to pick up a couple of bottles of bubbles to celebrate the new year with friends and loved ones on a New Year’s Day barbecue, you might have to go without. As New Year’s Day is a public holiday, most major bottle shops will have reduced hours.
Liquorland (and its likely its sister-stores First Choice Liquor and Vintage Cellars) stores will be open except for certain locations in Western Australia.
Both BWS and Dan Murphy’s will be open but with reduced trading hours. It’s best to check their respective webites to see if your local is open.
What major retailers are open on New Year’s Day?
If you fancy a spot of shopping or want to check out any early January sales, many retailers like Kmart, Target, Westfield, will be open on New Year’s Day, but with some reduced hours across the country.
Kmart stores will be closed in Adelaide’s metro area (excpet Rundle Mall), South Australia’s regional stores will stay open until 5pm or 6pm. Whereas, Kmart stores in WA will operate as normal except Northam (closed), Kalgoorlie (open until 3pm), and Esperance (open until 4pm).
Big W stores will be open across the country, except for those in Adelaide’s metropolitan area.
Target is a tad more complicated. All stores are open except for those in South Australia (however, Centrepoint in Adelaide is open), Wollongong in NSW, Charlestown in NSW, and Milduria in Victoria. Regional stores will be open but they will have reduced hours. In WA, some stores won’t open until 11am.
Westfield Shopping Centres are open everywhere except South Australia. However, hours across the country vary, so check the store locater to be certain.
