The best fiction books to add to your reading list

Escape reality…

I’ve long described myself as an avid reader; I really, truly love a good book.

And while I have to admit, I’m not a huge lover of non-fiction books, I consider myself an expert on fiction books.

I guarantee I’ve read pretty much everything that’s been published over the years, from romance to crime, from fantasy to mystery, from classics to series

If you’re looking for something to add to your reading list, I’ve rounded up my all-time favourite fiction books below.

The best fiction books:

the last letter from your lover

01

The Last Letter from Your Lover by Jojo Moyes

My god, I cried reading this book. Bittersweet tears.

The book constantly flips between the 1960s and 2003. In the 60s, Jennifer Stirling is a woman trying to navigate her life after waking up from a car accident with no memory. In 2003, Ellie Haworth is a journalist trying to track Jennifer down after stumbling upon several sweet love letters written to her…

The two tales weave together beautifully and the ending is just so delightful!

either side of midnight

02

Either Side of Midnight by Benjamin Stevenson

This book is the second in Benjamin Stevenson’s Jack Quick series but I preferred it to the first and it does work as a standalone.

With that being said, the first Jack Quick book Greenlight is also very good; I’d give it an 8.5 out of 10 whereas Either Side of Midnight would get a 9… Honestly, just read both books!

The sequel brings back the protagonist from Greenlight, investigative journalist Jack Quick, and follows him as he tries to solve a new mystery: Sam Midford, a famous television presenter, puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger during a live broadcast. But Sam’s twin brother is convinced it wasn’t suicide, it was murder…

best fictions books - the miller women

03

The Miller Women by Kelli Hawkins

This is not a lie or an exaggeration; I read The Miller Women in one afternoon because I was hooked right from the start and just couldn’t put it down.

For starters, the main mystery was incredibly compelling – Cara, a teenage girl goes missing and Nicole Miller starts investigating as she’s worried her daughter Abby may have killed Cara; why? Because Nicole is a killer herself and can’t help but wonder if murder runs in the family.

Plus, The Miller Women has, not one, but three strong female protagonists: as the story unfolds, it’s told from the perspective of grandmother Joyce Miller, mother Nicole Miller and daughter Abby Miller.

best fictions books - my sister's keeper

04

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

The ending of this book is so heartbreaking but one you won’t see coming, making My Sister’s Keeper a must-read.

And if you’re thinking, ‘I’ve seen the film adaptation and the ending wasn’t a plot twist,’ the movie’s ending vastly differs from the book; something that has greatly angered me since the Cameron Diaz-led film was released in 2009.

Incredibly thought-provoking, My Sister’s Keeper follows 13-year-old Anna as she sues her parents for medical emancipation after being told to donate a kidney to her sister and leukaemia patient Kate.

best fictions books - alice's adventures in wonderland

05

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carol

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a classic for a reason. It’s just such a pleasure to read and will put a smile on your face.

If you’re somehow unfamiliar (have you been living under a rock?), the story follows Alice who discovers a literal wonderland after falling down a rabbit hole.

best fictions books - the seven husbands of evelyn hugo

06

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I truly think this is one of – if not the – best romance novels of all time.

The book initially follows Monique Grant, a young magazine reporter who’s new to the industry. Monique becomes incredibly shocked when her boss tells her that the reclusive Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo says she’ll only agree to an interview if Monique herself conducts it and writes the story…

Nervous, but determined to jump start her career, Monique heads to Evelyn’s lush apartment ready for the interview.

Then she, and the reader, is transported to the 1950s and learns the truth about Evelyn’s glamorous and scandalous life… one that seems to intersect with Monique’s.
