The entertainment world is in mourning following the passing of beloved actress Shelley Duvall at the age of 75. Her life partner Dan Gilroy shared a tribute with The Hollywood Reporter: ‘My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”
Author Stephen King, whose novel The Shining was adapted into the iconic film starring Duvall, also shared his condolences. “Very sorry Shelley Duvall has passed. Wonderful, talented, underused actor,” King posted via X.
Leading the industry tributes, the official X account for the late Stanley Kubrik, who famously directed The Shining, shared a statement.
“Shelley Duvall, legendary character actor, and The Shining’s extraordinary Wendy Torrance has died at the age of 75.
“Shelley’s career was varied and long. Despite being dogged with exaggerations of her treatment on set, Shelley was always vocal about her experience filming The Shining saying she ‘wouldn’t trade it for anything’ because ‘working with loveable Stanley was a fascinating learning experience.'”
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram to share a loving tribute to the ‘legend’ that both her and her husband had the pleasure of working with.
“A long time ago, in what seems like a world far, far away, a young actress, Shelly Duvall created a series of videos, retelling tall tales and legends,” Curtis started.
“It was one of the first times I saw an actress pivot and become a creator and producer and weirdly enough both my husband and I worked for her. I played Annie Oakley in her retelling of that amazing, true story and my husband, directed Johnny Appleseed.
“Shelly was a great example to me. She showed that you could change and grow and develop and, of course, now we see so many wonderful actresses and actors become producers and directors and creators.
“Thank you, Shelly Duvall. You are a legend.”
Scott Goldberg, the director of Shelley’s last film in 2023 The Forest Hills, shared a statement with People: “Shelley leaves behind an amazing legacy and will be missed by so many people, myself included. I am proud of her for overcoming adversity to act again and will always be forever grateful for her friendship and kindness.”
