Over four intense sets, the competitors pushed their bodies to their limits on Tuesday evening. But it was Dane, the world no. 182, who won against the former world no. six.

When Dane won the final point, the victory wasn’t just his win. Speaking to the media after his 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 win, Dane paid tribute to his parents who “sacrificed a lot” for his tennis dreams.

“They’ve never been poor, but not ever been super well-off, so they’ve had to financially sacrifice a lot and emotionally sacrifice a lot,” Dane said.

“I’ve been pretty independent from when I started making enough money, kind of funding myself. But without a doubt, my parents have sacrificed a lot.”

Dane’s dad Clay, who also serves as his coach, sold his cleaning business so that he could afford to travel with his son.

“So they’ve been relentlessly [sacrificing] my whole life,” he added. “My friends, they sacrifice a lot to be there for me and it’s all out of love. I’d do the same for them.

“All those around me have done a lot and always been there for me.”

With so many people at Dane’s back, it’s clear to see tennis isn’t just a path to fame and money. In December 2025, the 24-year-old revealed the superficial results of playing tennis never “really resonated” with him.

“What really resonates now is using tennis to conquer my inner world,” he said on the Going Pro podcast. “That’s the discipline that’s required, the day in and day out repetitions, having to control your anger, having to deal with fear on the court. Even [when I] work with my dad now, trying to listen to him and not just get angry at him.”

Dane’s history in tennis is lengthy given the countless wins and matches as a teenager. But in March 2018, Dane won his first professional-level, main-draw match at the Australian Pro Tour event.

Dane was then declared a wildcard ranked no. 795 in 2021. Roughly 20 years old, he advanced to the final round of the Australian Open qualifying.

His best year so far was in 2022, winning six out of seven titles in the Australian Pro Tour, plus winning more than 60 singles matches. His ranking quickly went from the top 500 to no. 236.

The Sydney-born player made his grand slam main-draw debut at the 2024 Australian Open, but this 2026 win is his first win at the tournament.
