Whoever said the 2026 Australian Open couldn’t be a fashion show was wrong, because Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka just proved otherwise.
The 28-year-old made a bold entrance onto the tennis court on January 20 evening as she prepared to compete against Antonia Ruzic.

The world number one has been labelled a fashion icon for her jellyfish inspired outfit, designed by couturier Robert Wun. Naomi was inspired by a book she was reading to her two-year-old daughter, Shai, before sharing it with her Nike team.
“There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her she got so excited,” she told Vogue.
As to why Naomi wanted to wear such a piece to this year’s Australian Open, she simply confessed: “When I look back at the players who came before me, I think about how those moments—those looks—have become memories that live forever.”

“So much of the time, other people get to write our stories for us. This felt like a moment where I could write a little bit of my own.”
But this isn’t a one-time fashion moment for Naomi. The tennis player frequently takes to the court in bold clothing like oversized bows and tutu-layered skirts. Her clothing choices made headlines again in August 2025, when she stepped out wearing a orange crystal embezzled outfit with a matching Labubu she named, Billie Jean Bling.

With all eyes on Naomi, The Weekly is answering some of your burning questions about the tennis player.
Does Naomi Osaka have a child?
In July 2023, Naomi welcomed her first child, a daughter named Shai, who she shares with ex-boyfriend, rapper Cordae.
At the 2023 US Open, Naomi explained to ESPN that Shai means “God’s gift.”
“That’s how I wanted her to feel, like she’s God’s gift to me and her dad,” she added.
Naomi has kept her bub away from the spotlight, but little Shai did attend her very first tennis match at the 2025 US Open.
“It would be her first time at a tennis match, so I don’t know how loud she’s going to be,” Naomi confessed on Today US.

Why did Naomi Osaka retire?
Naomi Osaka did temporarily step away from tennis to focus on her mental health in 2021, leading to her withdrawal from the French Open and Wimbledon.
She played in 2022 Tokyo, before stepping away once again amid her pregnancy and birth of her daughter. In January 2024, Naomi returned to competitive tennis, playing at the Brisbane International.
Naomi touched on balancing motherhood and her tennis career in a documentary titled, Naomi Osaka: The Second Set in August 2025.
“I have multiple identities. My return to the sport is a love letter for moms,” she said. “Some people say she ended my career, but for me, it feels like she started my career.”
A heartfelt Instagram statement further revealed that those months away from the sport “has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to.”
