Kathy Bates has shared a hilarious encounter she once had with Meryl Streep at the 2003 Academy Awards (aka Oscars).
During an appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s On Me, Kathy recounted how she and Meryl had a shot of vodka together after they both lost the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“It was a very Joan Crawford-Bette Davis moment,” the Matlock star began.
“She slammed her evening bag down on the bar and said, ‘I’m having a vodka, straight, neat,. And I slammed my evening bag down. I said, ‘I’m having what she’s having,’ and we tossed it [back]. It was a moment.”

Kathy continued to say that she did enjoy the evening overall. But, she was disappointed that she didn’t win the Oscar that year.
And it was clear to her that Meryl was also upset at the loss.
“It really was a moment. We turned and toasted each other, and I could see in her eyes and I’m sure she could see in mine how we wanted it so badly. We thought, ‘Oh, we’re so close.’”
Kathy was nominated in 2003 for her performance in About Schmidt and Meryl was nominated for Adaptation.
Ultimately, the Oscar went to Catherine Zeta-Jones for her turn as Velma Kelly in Chicago.

Also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category that year were Queen Latifah for Chicago and Julianne Moore for The Hours.
Kathy has not won an Oscar since 1991 — she won Best Actress for her performance in Misery.
Meryl won an Oscar in 2012 — she took home Best Actress for her performance in The Iron Lady.
Meryl also previously won the Best Actress Oscar in 1983 for Sophie’s Choice and the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1980 for Kramer vs. Kramer.
