Mamma Mia 3 is officially on the way!
Judy Craymer, the creator and producer of Mamma Mia! The Musical, and producer of both films, recently confirmed that the third instalment is “well into development.”
“Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” Judy told Deadline in May 2025.
Of course, it’s early days, but read on for everything you need to know about Mamma Mia 3.
Is there a Mamma Mia 3 coming out?
Yes, as aforementioned, Judy Cramer has confirmed a third film is in the works.

This isn’t the first time Judy’s spoken about Mamma Mia 3 though.
“I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy,” she told the Daily Mail in June 2020.
Less than three years later, in May 2023, Judy told Deadline that the third Mamma Mia was “in its earliest stages.”
“I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there,” she said.

Who will be in the cast?
Nothing’s been confirmed when it comes to casting but it’s likely Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski will reprise their roles from the first two films.
“Listen, every single person [who was] in that movie would say yes [to Mamma Mia 3] in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Amanda – who plays Sophie – told Collider in June 2020.
It’s even likely Meryl Streep will return.
Yes, her character Donna was killed off in the second film but she’s game.
“I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but … Of course I want to do it,” Meryl told Deadline in May 2024.

Plus, Judy nodded yes when Deadline recently asked if Meryl would return for Mamma Mia 3.
She also revealed she was open to Sabrina Carpenter joining the cast.
“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” Judy said.
Why did Meryl Streep refuse to do Mamma Mia 2?
Meryl didn’t refuse to do the second film; she was just “hesitant.”

“She was hesitant about doing another film because she doesn’t typically do sequels,” Judy explained to Vogue in September 2023.
Of course, Meryl did briefly appear in Mamma Mia 2 as a ghost/vision of Donna.
The character then sang a duet with her daughter Sophie.
