Where can I stream Wicked?
Wicked Part 1 will hit Australian cinemas on November 21, 2024.
Then after its theatrical release, the first Wicked movie will make its way to streaming; watch this space for more information.
Wicked Part 2 will be released in cinemas on November 20, 2025.
Who stars in the Wicked movie?
Two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo — of Harriet and The Outsider fame — is set to star in Wicked as Elphaba AKA the Wicked Witch of the West.
Opposite Cynthia, is pop star Ariana Grande. She’ll play the bubbly Galinda AKA Glinda the Good.
Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey will play Fiyero and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will play Madame Morrible.
Rounding out the cast is veteran actor Jeff Goldblum, who’s set to play the illustrious Wizard of Oz.
Why is the Wicked movie two parts?
The Wicked musical, which has been on Broadway for the past 20 years, runs for approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
However, the film adaptation is being split into two films. You’d think that’d be so each film could have an average movie runtime, but that’s not the case…
In fact, the first Wicked movie has almost the same runtime as the whole musical at 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The decision to split Wicked into two films was so the filmmakers could freely explore the narrative more fully, giving each character and storyline the attention they deserve.
Additionally, the decision allowed for grander musical numbers and more elaborate visual effects, to better capture the magic and spectacle of Oz.
What is the plot of Wicked Part 1?
As the movie’s yet to be released, we’re not sure what the exact plot of Wicked Part 1 will be.
Our guess is that it’ll be similar, if not the same, as Act 1 of the musical.
So, Elphaba — a young outcast born with green skin and extraordinary powers — and Galinda — a popular and ambitious young woman — meet at Shiz University.
And their unlikely friendship begins to blossom all while political tensions rise in Oz.
