The Wicked movie has taken the world by storm.
It’s broken multiple box office records and has already been nominated for several Golden Globes.
But the movie is just Part 1 of 2.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Wicked Part 2, which has officially been titled, Wicked: For Good.
Will there be a Wicked movie Part 2?
Yes, Wicked was split into two parts.
Wicked Part 1 was released on November 21, 2024, and Part 2 will hit cinemas exactly a year later on November 21, 2025.
Why is Wicked coming out in two parts?
The decision to split Wicked into two films was so the filmmakers could freely explore the narrative more fully, giving each character and storyline the attention they deserve.
Is Dorothy in Wicked Part 2?
If you’re not worried about potential spoilers, read on.
In the stage version of Wicked, Dorothy appears in Act 2 – which Wicked Part 2 is based on.
However, you just see her silhouette and she’s more of a plot device than a character.
But judging by how the first Wicked film fleshed out the stage version, it’s likely the Dorothy character will be utilised more in Wicked Part 2.
Director Jon M. Chu has hinted as much; he told Variety in November 2024:
“In the [Broadway] show, Dorothy is around. They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much. I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two… There is interaction and some crossover.”
What happens in Wicked Part 2?
Again, if you’re not concerned about spoilers, read on.
Wicked: For Good is based on Act 2 of the Broadway show Wicked.
In Act 2, Elphaba, now a fugitive after standing up to the corrupt Wizard of Oz, seeks refuge with her sister Nessarose, who is now the Governor of Munchkinland.
Sadly, Nessarose has become bitter and self-absorbed, and enslaved the Munchkins after realising Boq loves Glinda not her.
Elphaba tries to help with magic, but after a series of spells accidentally go wrong, Nessarose becomes hostile towards her.
Meanwhile, Glinda basks in public adoration after aligning with the Wizard’s regime, but struggles privately with Elphaba’s growing infamy.
And furthermore, Fiyero, now Captain of the Guard, grows increasingly disillusioned with the Wizard and his oppressive rule.
Everything really kicks off when Madame Morrible tries to capture Elphaba by creating a cyclone that instead inadvertently drops Dorothy’s house on Nessarose…
As aforementioned, the first Wicked film adaptation fleshed out the story and added (and removed) some elements of Act 1, so we’re not sure what will change or be expanded upon in Wicked: For Good until its released.
