We might not get a party or a speech from celebrated documentarian Sir David Attenborough on his 100th birthday, but we will get a whole new series!

David Attenborough will turn 100 years old on 8 May 2026.

To mark his birthday and his contribution to television and the natural world, the BBC will release three special programmes.

The big event is David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth, which will be played live at the Royal Albert Hall, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra and special guests. It’s expected that the royal family, in particular King Charles and Prince William, will attend.

One of the programmes is Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure. These series will reveal the making of and behind-the-scenes aspects of David’s 1979 landmark documentary, Life on Earth. The new series will also feature new interviews with David and the original show’s production team. It will also reveal the challenges they endured during production, including being shot at, a military coup in Comoros, and encounters with wild gorillas in Rwanda.

The third show is Secret Garden. Across five episodes, Sir David will showcase the hidden natural world in back gardens all over Great Britain.

We will update when the shows will become available in Australia.
