The Crown producer hints a spinoff is on the way

“It’s obviously an endless subject…”

The Crown may have ended its six-season run last year but – fans rejoice! – that may not actually be the end.

It looks like there’s potentially going to be a spinoff (or multiple spinoffs) of the beloved royal drama.

Andy Harries (executive producer of The Crown and founder of Left Bank Pictures, the company that produced the series) has said that despite making a deal with Netflix, Left Bank Pictures has retained the rights to The Crown

Meaning Left Bank Pictures can continue to produce series, specials and films related to The Crown; something Andy is sure will happen down the track.

“I can assure you [that the deal with Netflix] feels very, very good and it gives us the opportunity to think about what we can do further with The Crown at some point. It’s obviously an endless subject,” Andy told BBC’s The Media Show.

“We could go back or we could go on. We did six seasons, a very defined period of six decades; there’s plenty of potential, which at some point, I suspect we’ll return to.”

This isn’t the first time speculation of The Crown getting a spinoff has occurred.

In 2022, Deadline reported that Netflix and Left Bank Productions were in the very early stages of developing a prequel.

Considering The Crown covered 1947-2005, starting with the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten and ending with the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, any potential spinoff is spoiled for choice when it comes to subject matter.

A spinoff could explore the pre-World War II era and dig deep into King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I’s reign.

Or it could delve into Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901.

Hell, a The Crown spinoff could even continue on from 2005 and chronicle Prince William’s wedding to Princess Catherine, Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, Queen Elizabeth II’s death and King Charles’ ascension to the throne…

Of course, only time will tell; here’s hoping The Crown actually does get a spinoff soon.
