If you love a good mystery thriller, a new Stan Original starring Oscar-nominated actress Jacki Weaver should be added to your watchlist: Two Birds.
Announced at the 2027 Nine Upfront, the series is set and filmed on location in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
The series follows Constable Izzie Cornwell (played by BAFTA award-winning Sheridan Smith), who arrives in an isolated regional mining town looking for a “fresh start” only to be pulled into a “tight web of deceit, guilt, and rising danger.”
Jacki Weaver plays “the formidable” Mrs Baxter, a role that was originally portrayed by Judy Davis. However, she pulled out due to scheduling conflicts.
Two Birds marks Jacki’s first return to Australian screens since Australia: An Unofficial History, a three-part SBS documentary series that premiered in March 2025. Jacki was the show’s host and narrator. This docuseries looks at Australia in the 1970s through rediscovered government films and explores the social and cultural changes of the decade.
The Australian actress has received two Academy Award nominations in her career, in 2011 for Animal Kingdom and in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook. Her Animal Kingdom performance was also recognised with an AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Joining Jacki Weaver and Sheridan Smith in the new Australian series are Stephen Peacocke (who appears to be a detective of some kind) and Colin Friels. Also, Lila McGuire, winner of the Graham Kennedy Award at the 2026 TV WEEK Logie Awards, is in the cast. Lila portrayed Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong in the ABC limited series, Goolagong.
Also in the cast are Fiona Button, Eva Morgan, Harry Greenwood, Nic Cassim, Victoria Fowler, Kit Jeakings-Bull, Matthew Pearce, Sarah Roberts and Matt Day.
