Nine handwritten letters and postcards from Princess Diana to the late actor Terence Stamp are the latest of her correspondence to go on auction. And these letters show the late royal’s cheekier side.
The People’s Princess was an avid letter-writer, and since her tragic death, many of her letters have ended up under the gavel.
Princess Diana and actor Terence Stamp shared a close, platonic friendship in the early 1990s. The correspondence shows Diana thanking him for lunches, joking with him, sharing personal thoughts, and expressing appreciation for his understanding during a difficult period in her life.
“It wasn’t a formal thing, we’d just meet up for a cup of tea, or sometimes we’d have a long chat for an hour. Sometimes it would be very quick,” Terence said of his friendship with Diana to the Daily Express in 2017. “The time I spent with her was a good time.”
“From one Cancerian to another,” Diana wrote in a birthday card featuring an image of a girl sticking out her tongue and saying “Na na na na na”, inside writing “You’re a lot older than I am.”
They seem to have connected over their shared star sign, as Princess Diana mentions it again in two other postcards and a cheeky card featuring a woman’s breast, which she signed “all the Breast from London”.
Other letters make mention of Prozac, an antidepressant and thank Terence for being a good friend to her:
“You are so kind to me and I’m touched to the core by your understanding of my job/role and what comes with it! Not many people would take the time and trouble to delve into such a complex situation… Three cheers for Prozac, not the American variety I hasten to add!“
In another, she writes “no Prozac withdrawals as yet…!”
The correspondence from the princess is found in the ‘Sound & Cinema Featuring The Terence Stamp Collection’. The collection is going up for auction from 15 June until 25 June, starting at 12:00 pm BST.
Besides the letters from Princess Diana, the collection also includes signed photographs of The Beatles, Terence Stamp’s 18-carat gold Rosch wristwatch, and a large collection of behind-the-scenes Polaroid photographs from Terence’s time on the set of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, where he played Bernadette Bassinger in the iconic Australian film.
Terence Stamp died aged 87 in August, 2025.
