Smart shopping tips from travel experts:
Black Friday can feel like a whirlwind, but with a little planning, you can score some serious travel savings. We asked experts for their top tips to help you snap up the best deals without the stress.
Have your travel plans ready so you can act fast
“Black Friday is a massive opportunity for travellers, but the deals move incredibly fast,” says Farouk Ismail, co-founder of Paylater Travel. “The key isn’t just waiting for the sale; it’s being prepared to act. The biggest challenge is the competition as airlines put a limited number of tickets on sale. It could be 100 seats, or it could be 10, so once they’re gone, the deal is over.”
Do your homework to spot genuine bargains
Know where you want to go and track prices before Black Friday hits. “If you know a flight to Bali typically costs $1100, you’ll recognise when a $650 Black Friday fare is actually worth jumping on,” Farouk advises. Keep in mind not all destinations discount equally – last year, Bali prices held steady while Pacific Islands saw major drops.
Think beyond the beaten path
Sometimes the best savings aren’t on the obvious routes. Florian Cointet, Director of Business Operations at Omio, says: “Phuket booked out? Try Krabi or Koh Yao Noi.” Omio’s research shows travellers are already turning to lesser-known destinations to save money (51%), avoid crowds (44%), and discover unique culture (40%).
Be flexible with dates and times
If your schedule allows, travelling mid-week or during shoulder season can unlock the greatest savings.
The best deals land in your inbox
“Booking platforms reward loyal customers first,” says Farouk. “In my experience, the best deals are sent to email subscribers before they’re marketed online or on social media.” Sign up for newsletters from your favourite airlines and travel platforms now!
Read the fine print
Black Friday deals often come with compromises, according to Farouk. This could mean non-refundable tickets, less convenient departure times, multiple stops, or off-season dates. Make sure you’re happy with the terms before booking – a slightly higher fare with flexibility can end up being the smarter choice.
Consider price protection in the Black Friday flight sales
Some platforms, like Paylater Travel, offer Price Protection guarantees. “Don’t wait until next week. If you find a good fare now, grab it,” Farouk says. “Our Price Protection guarantee allows you to book any flight in November, and if the fare drops during the Black Friday rush, we’ll credit you the difference.” This can take the stress out of FOMO and help you book with confidence.
