In fact, New South Wales has over 200 national parks spotted around the state to pick from. From camping, fishing, swimming, hiking and even abseiling, national parks are bursting with incredible adventures. Here are five national parks in NSW that are not to be missed.

Blue Mountains National Park

The city of Sydney is pincered by incredible bush, landscapes and national parks. One of the most famous of these parks is the Blue Mountains National Park, which is home to the iconic Blue Mountains, the three sisters and a litany of other natural wonders. Just an hour’s drive out of the centre of Sydney, the Blue Mountains is bursting with hikes, creeks, cliffs, camping sites and bush walks. At the very top of the mountains, you’ll also find the Jenolan Caves, the most ancient open caves in the world that are teeming with awe-inspiring limestone formations.

Royal National Park

Not only is Royal National Park the oldest amongst all the national parks in NSW, but it’s the second oldest in the world too. Sitting just an hour north of Sydney, the Royal National Park is a spectacular amalgamation of diverse landscapes and wildlife. Spanning 150sqkm, the Royal National Park is teeming with coastal cliffs, rainforests, and dreamy heathlands. The famed 26km Coast Track walk is an unrivalled highlight of the national park. The walk will take multiple days to complete, but along the way you’ll be privy to unprecedented access to stunning ocean views and you’ll even get the chance to spot whales during migration season. No matter how you love to get active, whether its swimming, kayaking, and cycling, the Royal National Park has a little bit of something for everyone.

Kosciuszko National Park

Kosciuszko National Park is not only home to Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, but it’s one of New South Wales’ most beloved natural oases. In winter, the park is blanketed in snow, attracting avid skiers and snowboarders from all over the country to tackle its exhilarating slopes. During the warmer months the park’s hiking trails open up, including the summit walk to Mount Kosciuszko making it a year-round adventure spot for the outdoorsy.

Dorrigo National Park

For a total escape from urban sprawl, head up north to Dorrigo National Park. Located in the hinterland of Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo National Park has to be seen to be believed. From lush green rainforests to breathtaking waterfalls, this national park is a total escape into nature. Inside the park is the famed ‘Skywalk’, an elevated boardwalk that will give you unparalleled panoramic views of all of the park’s natural wonders.

Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park is only 10 hours from Sydney, but it houses archeological history that’s over 42,000 years old. Home to the earliest modern human remains found in Australia, and possibly the world, Mungo National Park is laced with rich history. For the history buffs, be sure to book a guided tour of the park for a deeper understanding of its archaeological and cultural history. For the adventurers, take your pick of the park’s several walks and hikes, camping grounds, look outs and other natural wonders.
