It’s a longstanding debate: deodorant or antiperspirant? Everyone seems to have their preference, but how do we know which is best for our bodies?
Firstly, there is the fact that deodorants and antiperspirants work differently. While one aims to neutralise the bacteria in our underarms (which is what causes the odour when we sweat), the other aims to reduce the amount of sweat the body makes.
There are also claims that some antiperspirants and deodorants are linked to breast cancer, however, it has been revealed that there is not enough research to prove this.
Regardless of your preference, the skincare staple garners a lot of attention. The Weekly breaks down everything you need to know before making the decision.

What is the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant?
Deodorants are created to banish armpit odour when we sweat. They are typically formulated with alcohol, which changes the pH of the underarms, reducing the likelihood of bacteria.
Without bacteria, sweat remains odourless. It is only once the sweat and bacteria mix that we start to notice bad smells. This is why a lot of deodorants also contain fragrances, which combat the odours that may start to occur throughout the day.
Antiperspirants, on the other hand, limit the amount of sweat we produce, while also banishing odour. To reduce the amount that we sweat, antiperspirants usually contain aluminium as the main ingredient.
Aluminium works by creating a ‘plug’ on the area where the antiperspirant is applied, physically blocking the sweat glands from producing sweat.
Can deodorant or antiperspirant lead to cancer?
There have been some theories that deodorants and antiperspirants can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer. However, research suggests that there is no scientific evidence that links the products to cancer.
Cancer Australia says that there is only a very small number of poor-quality studies that have been done on this topic and that there is no conclusive evidence of there being a link between antiperspirants or deodorants to cancer.
If you are concerned, it is encouraged that you speak to your doctor.

Why can’t I wear deodorant or antiperspirant to a mammogram?
As mentioned above, deodorant or antiperspirant products can contain aluminium, which is a metal. It may show up as tiny white specks on a mammogram, explains the American Cancer Society.
These white specks can be confusing when doctors are looking for possible signs of breast cancer, so it is recommended to avoid wearing them altogether.
Should I be worried about aluminium in antiperspirants?
Antiperspirants work by blocking sweat glands, keeping the sweat from escaping the body. They can be particularly helpful for people who suffer from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis.
There have been some theories in the past that blocking the sweat glands in the underarm prevents our bodies from sweating out toxins associated with cancer. However, this has been proved as false, as toxins are not removed via our lymph nodes, but rather through our kidneys and liver.
The only area of concern is if you are worried about yellow or grey sweat stains on your clothes. This is likely due to the aluminium in your deodorant. When aluminium and sweat combine, they can create unpleasant stains on your clothing.
