Elton John: “Australia has always held a very special place in my heart”

The international megastar has long been admired for this stylish eyewear.

He’s sold over 300 million records, is one of only 21 EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony award) winners and is as renowned for his style as he is for his hits. Now, Elton John is ready for us all to don his very own designer glasses! The living legend has launched the Elton John Eyewear collection, exclusively with Specsavers. He chats to The Weekly about why he needed to launch his new range Down Under, as well as the secrets to his personal style.

We are excited to receive the Elton John Eyewear collection in Australia. Why was it important to you to launch here?

Australia has always held a very special place in my heart. It was one of the absolute highlights of the farewell tour… it’s unforgettable.

So to now have my eyewear range make its way Down Under feels like a beautiful full-circle moment. I’ve always felt a deep connection to Australia, and I’m thrilled that part of my style journey can now be shared more personally with my fans there.

Can you remember the first pair of glasses that cemented your love for them as a fashion statement?

Absolutely. It all started when I went to Los Angeles in the early ’70s. There was this explosive energy in fashion at the time, and everything felt so bold and bright.

I remember seeing these incredible women wearing oversized glasses which I just thought were glamorous. I tried on a pair and loved that sense of being able to have something so expressive. From that moment, eyewear became so important to my style. The bolder the better! I wasn’t just putting on a pair of glasses; I was putting out a statement.

Your looks across the decades continue to influence fashion. What do you think are the secrets to your style success?

For me, fashion has always been about fun and self-expression. I’ve never taken it too seriously – it’s a way to show my sense of humour, my mood, and who I am.

I love colour, I love being bold, and I’ve never been afraid to play around or try something unexpected. The key is not being afraid to think outside the box. I’ve always believed that style should be joyful and a little bit fearless.

Who are your own style icons?

I was hugely inspired by bold performers like Little Richard and Liberace – they had such flair and weren’t afraid to go all out.

Elvis was another big influence – he had that larger-than-life presence and real confidence in what he wore. In fact, the gold Gucci suit I wore at Glastonbury was a tribute to Elvis – a bold, iconic style.
