Among the first responders during the shooting at Bondi Beach’s Hanukkah festival, were the brave lifeguards risking their lives.
On December 14, two alleged gunmen took to Bondi Beach, attacking the many people who were visiting a Jewish festival.
Many of the Bondi lifeguards were among the first on scene, assisting those in need. Even lifeguards from Bronte and Tamarama beach raced to Bondi with first aid supplies.
Andy Reid reflected on Jackson Doolan’s sprint from Tamarama to Bondi in order to provide medical equipment. Jackson’s race into danger was captured by an on-looker (below).
“7 PM yesterday in Bondi – Lifeguard: Jacko @jacksondoolan running over from Tamarama with medical equipment to back up Lifeguards, Clubbies, Police, Ambos and other everyday heroes who tried to save people during yesterday’s horrific attack,” Andy wrote.
“I can’t even begin to imagine what you all had to witness and deal with, but you are all the most incredible people. I’m grateful we live in a world where you exist to show that kindness will always conquer evil. Thank you 🙏🏼”
Former lifeguard Ben Davis appeared on A Current Affair, revealing further insight into the heroic actions lifeguards did that day.
“Michael Jenkinson and Mario Marfella were on duty and another lifeguard Rory was down at the water’s edge when they heard the gunshots. [They] knew there was a big Jewish celebration, and immediately put two and two together, saw the people screaming and running away. Instead of going to with the crowd, they ran into it and as boards are still being fired, they went into the area where people are on the ground bleeding and started performing first aid,” Ben shared.
“Rory was on the shore, and performed a rescue in the middle of [the attack].”
In the hours after the attack, many lifeguards took to social media to share their experience, gratitude, and condolences.
Trent Maxwell shared his “deepest condolences” to all those impacted by the tragedy.
“Lifeguards also responded from Tama & Bronte beaches with defibrillators and first aid kits, lifeguards used the buggy bike to provide shelter for beachgoers, and also carried out a double rescue while gunshots were still being heard. Other lifeguards responded to both surf clubs, assisting people seeking shelter and medical care was given.

“What I witnessed in the triage area was pure professionalism from all first responders. In the midst of chaos, there was calm, control, and teamwork. Everyone played their part to stabilise casualties and prepare them for transport to hospital.
Trent encouraged Australians to continue to rally around one another and “check in on those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”
“I am immensely proud of the lifeguard team, all first responders, and the members of the public who came together with one shared purpose to help and save lives. ❤️” he concluded.
Joining the tributes in support of their coworkers was Trent Falson, reflecting on the solemn walk back to their Bondi tower.
“A moment in time we’ll never forget,” he began. “As we walked back to the tower quietly numb last night after doing all we could, I was astounded by what I saw my teammates, police, paramedics, local volunteer agencies, off duty doctors and bystanders do to try and preserve life. These may be chaotic and turbulent times but humanity is still strong.”
Countless stories have surfaced, discussing the bravery the Bondi lifeguards displayed during the attack. On their official Instagram account, they thanked the thousands of people who have shared messages of support.
“After yesterday’s terrorist attack, many heroic stories of courage have come to light. While we’re not sure when – or if they will all be shared, it’s important to acknowledge that some of our team chose to respond while shots were still being fired,” the statement read.
“We are incredibly proud of the team. We also acknowledge and thank NSW police, NSW ambulance, and all first responders and members of the community who acted with courage and care. It’s difficult to name everyone in one message, but our gratitude is deep and genuine.”
