Australian actress and star of Number 96 and Prisoner Candy Raymond has passed away, aged 75. Her cause of death has not been revealed.
Born Candida Raymond in Sydney 1950, Candy became a household name in Australia thanks to her portrayal of Jill Sheridan in the groundbreaking Australian soap opera Number 96 (1973) which explored daring storylines and controversial scenes for its time.
Candy also appeared in the cult classic drama Prisoner, playing journalist Sandra Hamilton. Andrew Mercado interviewed Candy about her role in the show in 2010 and about how it was revolutionary at its time for depicting so many women’s stories and a large women cast.
“A secret of its success was women of all ages and their stories, not their function in relation to men but the stories of the women,” she said in that interview.
Beyond television, Candy Raymond also appeared in numerous theatre productiuons and a number of significant Australian films, including Don’s Party (1976), Freedom (1982) and Breaking Up (1985).
Her last feature film role was in the action film A Case of Honor (1989), which was filmed on location in the Philippines. She portrayued a French-Vietnamiese brothel Madam.
Candy took part in the AACTA-award winning documentary Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (2008), which explored the Australian New Wave cinema of the 70s and 80s.
Her cause of death has not been revealed.
