Edwina Bartholomew announces cancer diagnosis

“It’s called Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia.”

Beloved Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew has announced the sad news that she’s been diagnosed with cancer.

Live on air this morning, Edwina said, “I have some news. And it’s not great news… not a panda story to finish the bulletin. I have cancer.”

She went on to say, “It’s a good kind… if that actually is possible. It’s called Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. It can be treated with a daily tablet and if I take care of myself, I will be completely fine.”

Edwina went on to reassure viewers that she was feeling “really positive about” her diagnosis and that it “genuinely is the luckiest unlucky thing to ever happen to” her.

Understandably, Edwina will be taking a break from Sunrise in September and when she returns, it’ll just be for a few days a week.

The diagnosis came about because Edwina decided, in honour of her 40th birthday, to get herself thoroughly checked out by doctors.

Skin check, mammogram, eye test – the works. And thankfully, her cancer was caught early thanks to some routine blood tests.

“Please, particularly for mums who always take care of everyone else, please take care of yourself too. And just check in with your doctor,” Edwina urged Sunrise viewers this morning.

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It develops when the body makes many abnormal white blood cells, increasing the risk of infection.
