The 2026 Emmy Awards are upon us and already history has been made with record-breaking wins and moments throughout the evening.

First up, Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role on Law & Order, is the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years.

Sally Field later made history, beating out Australian Sarah Snook for Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance in Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen!” she said as she received her award. It is her fourth Emmy win and at 79 she is the oldest actress to win the category. She’s just eight months older than Jessica Tandy was when she set the record in 1988.

“I have been so grateful and so proud to be a part of this community, the arts for 62 years or something. We’re the arts. We matter. Our voices matter. Our diversity, our unique storytelling, matters. We can’t let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged.”

In another win for mature women, Jean Smart has tied the record for most acting Emmys ever won. Her fifth consecutive Lead Actress in a Comedy win for Hacks took her career total to eight, joining Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman at the top.

Stephen Root also made history as the oldest winner of a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy at the age of 73 for his performance in Widow’s Bay.

Another great moment was when Stephen Colbert and the team behind The Late Show with Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation for winning Best Variety Series after the show was cancelled by its network. In his acceptance speech, Stephen said that shows like his are a “fantastic incubator for young people to come in … that is the future of business that we have to look after.”

Widow’s Bay were big winners tonight with 14 Emmy wins, overtaking the previous record of 13 set by Seth Rogen’s The Studio last year. Its lead actor, Matthew Rhys, also became the first to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year! He won Lead Actor in a Comedy for Widow’s Bay and Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series/Movie for The Beast in Me.
