It was the 2023 season of Married At First Sight Australia when Evelyn Ellis and Duncan James married a stranger in hopes of finding love.
But, oddly enough, Duncan and Evelyn weren’t matched by the MAFS relationship experts.
Evelyn was an intruder bride, matched to Rupert. Who could forget those awkward vows?
Meanwhile, Duncan was matched with Alyssa. The pair actually made it to final vows, before Duncan admitted he couldn’t see their relationship working outside the experiment.
Evelyn and Duncan were friends throughout the entire season. But fans spotted a hint of a romantic connection during the couple swap episode on MAFS.
When speaking about how their relationship went from platonic to romantic, Duncan revealed they began hanging out after the show.
“Everyone’s sort of friends in the cast, and obviously me and Evelyn living in Sydney we probably hung out a little bit more,” Duncan told 9Entertainment.
“All of a sudden we went out on a couple of nights, and some of the warm fuzzy feelings happened in my stomach and I thought, ‘What’s this? How we going here?’”
One thing led to another, and the pair shared their first kiss at Mardi Gras in 2023.
In August 2023, the lovebirds moved in together and Duncan became a dad to Evelyn’s two dachshunds, Pickles and Mustard.
Flash forward to April 2025, when the pair were celebrating their second anniversary.
“2 years of loving you ❤️,” Duncan shared on Instagram. “Which is 730 days, and approximately 1,051,200 minutes of putting up with each other
“Thank you, for being you x,” he concluded.
Duncan has since teased a proposal could be on the horizon for the lovebirds. While speaking to Daily Mail at the 2025 ARIA Awards, Duncan shared that Evelyn had already revealed what her dream engagement ring looks like.
“There are always plans. You just have to be sure the girl will actually say yes before you go ahead and do it because it can be career ending,” he said.
“She has told me the type of diamond shape she likes. A few hints and nudges there. I feel like boys need that sometimes from their partner.”

“It all led me to you,” she captioned the post.
So, couple swap turned into identity swap? Evelyn and Duncan took Halloween 2024 to a whole new level.
“This year we decided to take things a little further and fully commit, this took so bloody long haha and was one of the scariest things we’ve ever done (seeing each other as ourselves) PS I don’t look like Duncan at all,” Evelyn wrote.
While answering a Q&A on Instagram Evelyn once described the 11-year-age gap between her and Duncan as a “blessing.”
“I feel like we’re on the same page in life, we’re going in the same direction, we want the same things,” she shared.
The pair moved in together shortly after starting a relationship. Evelyn soon realised her partner had an interesting bad habit…
“He does have a tendency to leave his clothes everywhere. I hate doing washing, so I will wear a t-shirt for five days straight, but Duncan will change his shirts five times in one day,” she said on a Instagram Q&A.
“So the live-in maid at home ends up having to do all his washing and folding and all that,” she joked, referring to herself.
In December 2024, Evelyn shared a tribute to her “sexy and charming man,” Duncan for his birthday.
“You are the one who listens without judgment, understands effortlessly, and always shows up for the people you love. Your presence lights up every room you enter, and, let’s face it, you’re the life of every party (even if people tolerate me because of you, haha)!” she wrote.
Once again, Duncan and Evelyn take costumes to a whole other level… but this time, they got a glimpse at what they’ll will look like in the next 60 years.
