Jimmy Kimmel called out the Academy for Greta Gerwig’s Best Director snub
Host Jimmy Kimmel addressed the Barbie elephant in the room in his opening monologue.
“Now Barbie is a feminist icon, thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to be nominated for Best Director tonight,” he said.
“Hold on a second. I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her, by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this,” he then joked.

Billie Eilish received a standing ovation for her heart wrenching performance
Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell took to the stage to give an emotional and beautiful performance of What Was I Made For? from Barbie (which ultimately won Best Original Song). And the audience gave the singer/songwriters a standing ovation when they finished; Greta Gerwig and America Ferrera were visibly tearing up too.

John Cena randomly made a nude appearance
Jimmy Kimmel brought up the infamous Oscars incident when in 1974 a streaker ran across the stage. Then as a part of a skit, John Cena appeared practically nude and presented the award for Best Costume Design.

Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling playfully leaned into the ‘Barbenheimer’ rivalry
Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling took to the Oscars stage to present, during which they playfully made digs at one another’s films (Emily starred in Oppenheimer and Ryan starred in Barbie).
For instance, Emily joked that Oppenheimer was nominated for more Oscars than Barbie, whereas Ryan joked that it was called ‘Barbenheimer’ not ‘Oppenbarbie’ because Oppenheimer rode Barbie’s “coattails all summer”.

Multiple Best Supporting Actor winners presented the award this year
Sam Rockwell, Tim Robbins, Ke Huy Quan, Christoph Waltz and Mahershala Ali – who have all taken home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar – announced this year’s winner: Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr won his first Oscar
Robert Downey Jr won his first ever Oscar. The veteran actor made a hilarious but touching acceptance speech where he thanked his “terrible childhood” and his wife Susan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito reunited
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito, who starred in the 1988 film Twins and the 1994 film Junior together, reunited at the 2024 Oscars to present the award for Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing.
The pair also noted that they both “tried to kill Batman” – Arnold played the villain in Batman & Robin and Danny played the villain in Batman Returns – and the camera then panned to Michael Keaton, who played Batman in the latter of those films, sitting in the audience.

Ryan Gosling performed I’m Just Ken in a bedazzled pink suit
All eyes were on Ryan Gosling when he performed I’m Just Ken; he was joined on stage by multiple of the ‘Kens’ from Barbie including Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Slash also made a surprise cameo during the song.

We got a preview of the Wicked movie… Sort of
The stars of the upcoming Wicked movie Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande presented the awards for Best Original Song and Best Original Score together. Cynthia wore a green gown and Ariana wore a pink gown – not so subtle nods to their characters Elphaba and Glinda.

The In Memoriam section paid tribute to Matthew Perry, Alan Arkin, Jane Birkin and more
Set to a beautiful orchestral version of Time To Say Goodbye (Con te partirò) sung by Matteo Bocelli and Andrea Bocelli, the 2024 Oscars paid tribute to those in the film industry who passed away during the past year. Matthew Perry, Alan Arkin, Jane Birkin, Andre Braugher, Carl Weathers and Tina Turner were among those honoured.

Best Actor winners Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker presented this year’s award
There was some serious star power on the Oscars stage before Best Actor was announced. Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker – who have all taken home the Best Actor Oscar in previous years – presented the award to this year’s winner: Cillian Murphy.

Best Actress winners Sally Field, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron and Jessica Lange presented this year’s award
In a similar format to the way Best Actor was presented, multiple Best Actress winners – Sally Field, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron and Jessica Lange – presented the Best Actress award to this year’s winner: Emma Stone.

The prestigious Best Picture Oscar went to Oppenheimer
Al Pacino presented the award for the prestigious Best Picture Oscar, which was ultimately won by Oppenheimer. However, in a slightly awkward moment, Al didn’t read out any of the nominees (American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest) before announcing the winner.
