In pleasantly surprising news, The Last Thing He Told Me has been renewed for Season 2.
The first season – which was originally billed by Apple TV+ as a miniseries – was based on the Laura Dave novel of the same name.
Laura is set to publish a sequel to The Last Thing He Told Me in 2025, and the recently announced Season 2 will be based on this upcoming novel.
The Last Thing He Told Me series adaptation starred Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, and was executively produced by Reese Witherspoon.
And, excitingly, Jennifer, Angourie and Reese have all confirmed their involvement with Season 2.
Jennifer, who played The Last Thing He Told Me’s protagonist Hannah Hall, said in a statement:
“Like so many people, I fell for Hannah on page one of Laura Dave’s gripping novel.
“The move to actor and producer from reader and super fan was delicious – and made even sweeter by collaborating with Laura, Josh [Singer, the series’ showrunner], Reese and everyone at Hello Sunshine, as well as the amazing teams at Apple and 20th.
“Being part of this group, not to mention part of such a stellar cast, was a career highlight for me. I’m thrilled to get to tell more of Hannah’s story – I couldn’t have said yes more quickly to Season 2!
“These characters and their story mean so much to me, as I know they do to the many who have championed our show; we’re excited to give audiences even more with this next chapter.”
Reese echoed Jennifer’s comments and said:
“We are thrilled to be bringing this incredible team back together for another season of The Last Thing He Told Me on Apple TV+.
“The audience response to Laura Dave’s gorgeous novel and Jen Garner’s stunning performance in the series was so gratifying for all of us at Hello Sunshine. We can’t wait to dive in and see what’s in store for Hannah Hall in Season 2.”
It’s likely that the second season won’t be released until late 2025 or early 2026 though, so in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know in regards to The Last Thing He Told Me…

What is the last thing he says in The Last Thing He Told Me?
Warning! Minor spoilers ahead.
Both the book and series follow Hannah Hall, who is happily married to Owen Michaels but has a strained relationship with his 16-year-old daughter Bailey.
This relationship is put to the test though when Owen, amidst a work scandal, disappears, leaving nothing but a note for Hannah that reads, “Protect her” – obviously referring to Bailey.
This note is what the title of both the book and series is based on; “protect her” was the last thing he told Hannah before disappearing.
However, the real last thing Owen ever says to Hannah occurs at the very end of the story.
Both the book and series ends with a flashforward; it’s been a few years since the main events and Hannah spies Owen in disguise (but still wearing his wedding ring) at her exhibition.
He then approaches her and says, “The could-have-been boys still love you.” This is a call back to a previous chapter/episode but ultimately is just Owen’s way of saying he still loves Hannah.
