The show is based on a novel of the same name by Australian author Richard Flanagan. The original novel won the 2014 Man Booker Prize.
Its plot centres on Doctor Dorrigo Evans across three timelines.
In 1940 as a young medical student preparing to ship out to war who asks his girlfriend Ella to marry him and then meets his unlce Keith and his wife Amy for the first time. Then in 1942, as a prisoner of war in a Japanese labour camp. And finally in 1989 as an older gentleman, renowned surgeon and celebrated war hero.
Each era unveils various elements of his illicit love affair with Amu and its impact on his life, war, and his family.
