When the original film premiered in 1986, it sparked more than conversation — just about everyone was singing You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ by The Righteous Brothers.
Top Gun became the top-grossing film that year.
Thriving on our love of nostalgia, Maverick returned in 2022. Goose didn’t feature in the sequel (for obvious reasons) but his son Rooster did. And if you weren’t a fan of the original movie, that beach scene certainly swayed people’s opinions.
Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, the franchise will return for a third instalment. Producers are remaining tight-lipped on the project, but we are detailing everything we know about Top Gun 3 below.
Will there be a Top Gun 3?
Paramount confirmed Top Gun will return for a third installment during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.
When we said the details were slim, we meant it. According to The Guardian, the only attached name is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has not yet signed on.
Tom Cruise, however, has a busy schedule. Jerry told People in 2024 that a story was pitched to Tom, which “he liked… but he’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.”
The Mission Impossible actor even admitted it took him 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. However, we don’t have that kind of time…
Who is the cast of Top Gun 3?
Well, it wouldn’t be Top Gun without Tom Cruise as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
Unfortunately, the cast list for Top Gun 3 has not yet been confirmed. We do have a wishlist of returning cast members however, including Miles Teller (Rooster), Glen Powell (Hangman), Monica Barbaro (Phoenix), and Lewis Pullman (Bob) who all starred in Maverick.
Val Kilmer, who played Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, will not return to the world of Top Gun following his tragic passing in April 2025.
