Prince Christian of Denmark turned 18 – here’s what you need to know

From tiaras to eligible princesses, the young prince's birthday was the royal event of the season.

The eldest son of Crown Princess Mary of Denmark just had a huge weekend of royal celebrations for his 18th birthday. Prince Christian of Denmark is second in line to the throne, however the festivities that commemorated the milestone birthday were more than fit for a king.

Leading up to the big day, a postage stamp adorned with the Royal’s face was issued by the Greenlandic postal service and telecommunications company, Tusass. Prince Christian can be seen wearing the traditional white anorak – a Greenlandic national costume. The official royal Instagram commemorated the first use of the birthday stamp with a video of a letter being sent from Nuuk to Amalienborg.

However, as exciting as a royal stamp is, there was also a royal celebration on Sunday; Her Majesty Queen Margrethe hosted a gala dinner in honour of her grandson at Christiansborg Palace.

What was the dress code?

Her Majesty the Queen spared no expense as she set the official dress code as white tie with honours. This meant decadent ball gowns and official uniforms – and of course, tiaras!

Who was on the guestlist?

The gala in honour of Prince Christian of Denmark was a royals-studded affair with a long list of guests from a multitude of representing industries… The Danish Royal Household Instagram page revealed that ‘several hundred’ invites were in fact sent out last month.

Among the guests were Prince Christian’s godfather, Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon, who was accompanied by his daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 19. King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who were accompanied by their two eldest daughters, Princess Catharina-Amalia, 19, and Princess Alexia, 18, also attended.

Is Prince Christian of Denmark single?

From what we know, the young prince is currently not spoken for, however, after being spotted at the Grand Prix in Monaco this past June alongside Princess Maria Chiara di Borbone-Two Sicilies, many speculated that the two were dating. However, Maria did not make an appearance at his birthday party so royalists are now hoping a real-life Cinderella story comes to fruition for Christian…

Confused? Well, the Danish royal palace took to Instagram to post a photo of a single sparkling shoe that was found at Christian’s celebration.

“Is it Cinderella who forgot her shoe last night?” the image was captioned.

“When the guests at Her Majesty the Queen’s gala dinner yesterday had gone home, this lonely stiletto shoe was left at Christiansborg Castle. The owner is welcome to contact us to get it back.”
