The federal government is expanding all 33 existing endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics across the country to provide dedicated menopause and perimenopause care.

The clinics will continue to provide specialised support for endometriosis and persistent pelvic pain, while offering more coordinated support to help women with menopause and perimenopause manage their symptoms and maintain their wellbeing. Alongside clinical care, women will be able to access services including physiotherapy, dietetics and psychology.

There is at least one endometriosis and pelvic pain clinic in every state and territory.

Health Minister Mark Butler said the expanded services were responding to women who wanted their concerns to be taken seriously.

Assistant Health Minister Rebecca White said: “For too long, a lack of information and a culture of silence around menopause has left women feeling confused, dismissed and unsupported.

“By expanding menopause and perimenopause care through al 33 Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinics, we’re making it easier for women to access trusted advice, treatment and care closer to home.

“Menopause and Perimenopause affects every woman differently, which is why it is important that women can access the right support, at the right time, from health professional who understand their needs.”

Menopause is when a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period, with no other medical explanation. Perimenopause is the transitional stage leading up to menopause, when hormonal changes and symptoms can begin.

The average age of menopause in Australia is 51, although every woman’s experience is different. Symptoms can include hot flushes, sleep problems, low energy, muscle or joint pain, anxiety, brain fog and changes in mental health.
